Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance, hasn't hunted a demon in ages.
That must be why she missed the one wandering through the pet food aisle of the San Diablo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, he managed to catch her attention an hour later-when he crashed into the Connor house, intent on killing her.
Now Kate has to clean up the mess in her kitchen, dispose of a dead demon, and pull together a dinner party that will get her husband elected to County Attorney-all without arousing her family's suspicion. Worse yet, it seems the dead demon didn't come alone...
It's time for Kate Connor to go back to work.
Our heroine Kate Connor was a retired demon slayer and not just the ordinary slayer, she was one of the best. Level Four to be precise. But life happened, she fell in love with her first husband Eric (who I think was also a slayer or in the know) they got married and had Allie who is now 14, but Eric died. She then remarried after years to Atty. Stuart Connor -aspiring politician and adding Timmy, 2 yuears old, in their family. Kate is finally happy, contented and absolutely normal until she spotted a demon at the local grocer store who possesed a body of an old man and followed her home then attacked her inside her kitchen while preparing Rigatoni for her husband's dinner party. To make matters worse that was not some stray demon, it was a spawn of the High Demon Goramesh, so with that Kate has no choice but to get back to work. Not just for the safety of her family but her whole community as well. The question is how can Kate keep up in keeping her secret?
It was a nice fun read, different from most books I've been picking up lately (the single and ready to mingle chicks that I typically read) I found myself rooting for Kate - "Go demon slaying soccer mom!". When the first demon came out of nowhere she began re-training herself, after 14-15 years of hiatus she lost some of her mojos but she soon gain it back. I love the whole covert / undercover thing it was stressful on her part but made some really comedic moments. At times it's frustrating, why can't she just tell them already but at the same time that tension add up to the spice of the story. A good start for a series, fantastic mommy lit and likeable characters. Definitely worth checking out.
